Immigration Services Coordinator

ABOUT THE POSITION
Under the supervision of the Executive Director, the Immigration Services Coordinator will spearhead UAO’s citizenship and immigration services in the African immigrant and refugee community in Illinois.

JOB DESCRIPTION/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Legal Case Work
  • Organize and facilitates community educational presentations on immigration, and citizenship;
  • Refers eligible individuals for appropriate immigration and citizenship services;
  • Assess individuals’ eligibility for immigration benefits;
  • Assist individuals with the completion of the appropriate applications;
  • Perform factual and legal research and regularly monitor developments in immigration law and procedure;
  • Explain relevant policies and case procedure to individuals;
  • Manage cases of immigration applicants;
  • Maintain communication with clients via phone, email, or mail regarding case updates;
  • Advocate for clients before USCIS.
Advocacy & Administrative Support
  • Mobilize community response to immigration policy issues
  • Facilitate active participation in advocacy work through constituent meetings, hearings, conferences, and legislative visits;
  • Build relationships and collaborate with allies and partners on civic engagement and advocacy activities such us legislative visits, rallies, press conferences, etc.;
  • Plan, monitor and evaluate effectiveness of program activities and implement best practices
  • Identify, train and develop a network of non-legal and/or legal volunteers;
  • Collect and maintain program data, and prepare clear and concise reports
  • Ensure timely compliance with program-related requirements, and provide comprehensive case management;
  • Translates program materials and documents into appropriate languages
  • Perform other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Education
Bachelor’s Degree in Law, Social Work, Social Justice/Human Rights, Sociology, Anthropology or related field

Management

  • Possess advanced interpersonal communication skills and passion for social and economic justice
  • Experience with developing creative and technical written materials
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data and written reports
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from clients and the general public
  • Ability to manage and organize multiple tasks
  • Must be proactive, a self-starter
  • Well organized with high attention to details and deliver accurate work within strict deadlines
  • Ability to manage and prioritize time and responsibilities, including the ability to work independently
  • Adapt to change and respond to unexpected issues

Commitment to service

  • Community service experience
  • Enthusiastic and positive attitude toward helping others
  • Ability to work weekends and evenings when necessary
  • Demonstrate ability to work in a culturally diverse environment

Other

  • Speak and/or write French at a colloquial skill level in carrying out position duties in conjunction with Francophone African immigrants and refugees is desired;
  • Computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook, PowerPoint, & Knowledge of Access).

Internships

If you are a college student or recent graduate, the UAO is ideal for developing skills and experience while working. Internship opportunities are available throughout the year. Our interns have diverse backgrounds—from Psychology, Social Work, Justice Studies, Law, International Relations, Public Health, Public Policy, Business Management, Marketing, Communications, Journalism, Information Technology and many more.

Requirements:
  • Each intern must meet any designated minimum requirements for the specific internship
  • A commitment to the internship and a consistent schedule

Benefits:

CURRENT OPENINGS:

Immigration Legal Intern

The Legal Intern works under the supervision of the Citizenship and Immigration Coordinator. 

TASKS:

  •  Assist with client intakes and consultations – help client fill out intake form, take notes during client consultation and type notes up, make photocopies of documentation to be added to client file etc;
  • Conduct legal research on various immigration matters and summarize research in legal memorandum citing relevant sources;
  • Assist in case management of immigration applicants including but not limited to: maintaining client files, drafting cover letters and correspondence with USCIS and other immigration agencies, preparing application packets, reviewing case files;
  • Help filling out immigration forms;
  • Participate in training on various immigration matters;

SKILLS:

  •       Strong legal writing and research skills;
  •       Fast learner , ability to think quickly and to take initiative;
  •       Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to adapt to a diverse cultural environment;
  •       Basic knowledge of immigration law strongly preferred;
  •       French-speaking preferred.

TIME COMMITMENT:  Minimum of 3 month commitment

Communications and Marketing Intern

United African Organization (UAO) is seeking a Communications and Marketing Intern. The intern will help extend UAO’s reach by creating content for various communications channels, which directly contribute to increasing the organization’s visibility to various stakeholders. This is a wonderful opportunity for someone who is passionate about making a difference through marketing and communications.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The marketing and communications intern will help to -
• Review current marketing and communication initiatives to ensure consistent branding and voice in both internal and external communications
• Create a strategic marketing and communications plan to further UAO’s mission
• Manage UAO’s website presence and develop web content
• Identify and create new communication strategies
• Develop an updated media list, write press releases, and pitch stories to local and national media
• Maintain ongoing updates of UAO’s social media accounts
• Design marketing and communication plan for all UAO events
• Work on copywriting projects including but not limited to brochures, e-newsletters, direct mail appeals, and annual reports
• Attend Communication meetings, as requested

QUALIFICATIONS
• Undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree in marketing, communications, nonprofit management, or similar area of study
• Excellent time management skills with the ability to organize and multi-task
• Commitment to UAO’s mission
• Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of individuals
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite or other design program (preferred)
• Pro-active, Self Starter, who can work independently, as well as with a team

Administrative Assistant Intern

United African Organization (UAO) is seeking an Administrative Assistant Intern to offer office support and administrative duties, such as:

  • Receive calls, take messages, and record correspondence;
  • Handle inquiries and requests;
  • Arrange meetings and take minutes;
  • Enter data into case management systems;
  • Translate documents and interprete where necessary;
  • Assist in administrative duties including making copies, filing records, preparing mailings;

This is a wonderful opportunity for someone who is passionate about making a difference through administrative and office support.

Citizenship Volunteer

You can play an important role by volunteering to assist others to become U.S. citizens and participate in our democracy. You will gain valuable skills in the citizenship process and network with fantastic team of volunteers and staff. Our monthly citizenship workshops take place usually on a Saturday morning or a weekday afternoon.

Training is provided for the following roles:
N-400 preparer, Fee-waiver preparer, Legal Attorney

HOURS: 3-5 hours a month
