Organizer & Policy Director

POSITION SUMMARY
UAO is seeking a creative and relational individual to spearhead the design and management of its public policy strategies on issues impacting African immigrants and refugees, to engage its membership in campaigns, and to oversee the development and execution of its agenda and priorities. In this role, you will deepen the involvement of UAO’s members in its campaigns, help plan our advocacy agenda in conjunction with other programs and policy departments, and ensure that member organizations have opportunities to engage and develop their leaders within
campaigns. The UAO provides its members with organizing and advocacy strategies, training and technical assistance on issues that affect their respective community members, and up-to-date information and policy analysis on immigrant- and refugee-related issues. UAO ensures the effectiveness of our member organizations by providing ongoing leadership development opportunities, promoting citizenship and civic participation, monitoring and analyzing immigrant-related laws and policies, forming cross-ethnic alliances, and informing the general public about the positive contributions of Black immigrants.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
❖ Lead UAO’s policy and advocacy agenda at federal, state and local levels;
❖ Develop, monitor and analyze policy on relevant issue areas and make; recommendations on federal, state and city laws or regulations;
❖ Develop and implement advocacy strategies (to include legislative visits, letters, fax and call-in campaigns, media relations, hearings, actions, etc.);
❖ Prepare updates, talking points, action alerts, sample letters, etc. as part of advocacy strategies;
❖ Develop and implement advocacy trainings and capacity building on advocacy strategies to member organizations around campaigns;
❖ Assist in writing funding proposals and reports on activities relevant to immigration policy and advocacy;
❖ Build deep relationships with members and engage members around emerging issues in order to take ownership in campaigns;
❖ Guide and engage members in understanding the political and power analysis and opportunities to effectively prioritize annual campaigns;
❖ Create a communications strategy to help advance the efforts of the organization;
❖ Engage new members and allies to help advance goals;
❖ Assist with various projects and perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Education: Graduate degree preferred
Management: At least 3-5 years of relevant experience working on immigrant and refugee community issues.
● Passionate and commitment for UAO’s mission and vision;
● Excellent interpersonal skills;
● Excellent organizational, written and verbal communication skills;
● Ability to prioritize diverse responsibilities, handle projects simultaneously, meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment;
● Car and valid driver’s license required;
● Must be proactive and results-oriented;
● Very analytical and strong knowledge of legislative process (local, county, state, federal);
● Excellent analytical, public speaking and organizing skills and public policy background required;
● Multi-lingual capacity is a plus.

Training & Membership Coordinator

POSITION SUMMARY
UAO is seeking a dynamic professional with program operations experience to design and manage training for our leaders and members from diverse African communities. We are growing our leaders across the State to help build a more just and inclusive society for Black immigrants and refugees. We connect and engage emerging leaders, advocates and navigators in collective dialogue and skillbuilding. You will design an exciting curriculum around an array of topics, support the implementation of our leadership programs, work on the frontlines of participant engagement, manage program operations, and directly facilitate the learning experience. As an excellent networker and convener, you will bring strategic, creative and critical thinking to the working with our members, partner organizations and allies.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
● Lead the recruitment of leaders and members;
● Onboard participants to the learning experience;
● Design and develop pertinent program formats and templates;
● Create our facilitator guides and materials to ensure that our facilitators have everything they need to run sessions;
● Provide ongoing support for participants;
● Monitor the overall experience and identify opportunities for improvement;
● Support the development of new programs, curriculum and other UAO programs;
● Liaise across teams for alignment on design, development, launch of courses – marketing, tech, data/systems, user journeys;
● Evaluate program to assure quality and alignment with UAO strategies;
● Incorporate data and other information from members, leaders, partners, teammates to refine course templates and roadmaps;
● Stay abreast of best and new practices in learning to incorporate into program;
● Manage relationships and collaborative projects with external funders or partners.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
● Experience with learning design, pedagogy, curriculum development, online course production and facilitation;
● Ability to learn new topics quickly and distill and synthesize content for participants;
● Experience in developing digital content and familiarity with e-learning platforms and technologies;
● Detail-oriented with ability to manage multiple concurrent and dynamic projects;
● Strong written and verbal communication skills;
● Experience managing a portfolio of educational products;

Immigration Attorney

ABOUT THE POSITION

UAO is seeking a full-time Immigration Attorney experienced in practicing in front of USCIS and EOIR. The immigration attorney will provide immigration consultations and representation for individuals seeking immigration benefits before USCIS and EOIR. The attorney will also be responsible for program outreach and development, providing legal consultations and representation before USCIS and EOIR, and developing relationships with key partners in the implementation of the program

JOB DESCRIPTION/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Legal Services and Support
  • Assess individuals’ eligibility for immigration benefits at consultations;
  • Assist individuals with the completion of the appropriate applications, such as family petitions, consular processing, adjustment of status, U-visa, and VAWA, asylum, and removal defense cases;
  • Explain relevant policies and case procedure to individuals;
  • Provide legal oversight at workshops when applicable;
  • Train non-legal and/or legal workshop volunteers to complete applications when necessary;
  • Perform factual and legal research and regularly monitor developments in immigration law and procedure;
  • Advocate for clients before USCIS and EOIR;
  • Conduct strategic community outreach to promote awareness about UAO programs;
  • Conduct community presentations on immigration topics such as “Know Your Rights;
  • Develop relationships with organizing partners and explore collaborative opportunities with potential allies
  • Other legal services and support as the need arises.

Case Management

  • Provide case management of immigration applicants including but not limited to: maintaining client
  • files, drafting cover letters, preparing application packets, reviewing case files;
  • Collect and maintain program data, and prepare clear and concise reports
  • Plan, monitor and evaluate effectiveness of program activities and implement best practices
  • Follow up on pending case work and maintain communication with clients via phone, email, or mail
  • regarding missing documentation necessary for submission of application;
  • Respond to all phone calls and email inquiries on immigration issues in a timely manner.
  • Assist in translating immigration materials in appropriate languages to facilitate community understanding;
  • Attends required program meetings and training to increase knowledge and skills;
  • Assesses community needs and barriers to services, and develops recommendations and solutions;
Administrative Support
  • Represent UAO at meetings, conferences, and/or legislative visits when necessary;
  • Coordinate logistics for UAO immigration and citizenship events, meetings and relevant activities;
  • Collaborate with UAO partners and allies on civic engagement and advocacy activities including trips to Springfield, rallies, press conferences, etc.;
  • Participate in on-going immigration trainings and other professional development; and
  • Identify, train and develop a network of community advocates and volunteers
  • Speak and/or write French at a colloquial skill level in carrying out position duties in conjunction with Francophone African immigrants and refugees is desired;
  • Assist with various projects and perform other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Education

  • JD Required
  • Written and oral fluency in English/French desired;
  • At least 2 years’ experience working in immigration legal services, immigration court experience strongly preferred;

Management

  • Possess advanced interpersonal communication skills and passion for social and economic justice, and sensitivity to challenges of the immigrant community;
  • Sensitivity to the needs and legal issues affecting people of diverse backgrounds;
  • Ability to stay organized, manage a high volume workload, and work under strict deadlines;
  • Strong proofreading and detail-oriented research and writing skills;
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from clients and the general public
  • Ability to manage and organize multiple tasks simultaneously and independently, often under pressure and in a fast-paced environment;

Immigration Case Worker

POSITION SUMMARY

The UAO is seeking a dynamic professional Immigration Case Worker to join its immigration team  to provide administrative and case management assistance. As an excellent networker and convener, you will bring strategic, creative and critical thinking to the work with our community members, partner organizations and allies.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the recruitment of program participants;
  • Onboard participants through the Department’s procedures, guidelines, and processes;
  • Assist individuals with completion of intake forms as needed.
  • Conduct phone / in-person interviews where necessary to determine eligibility for  services, identify basic case facts, and identify basic legal problems;
  • Administer conflicts check, initial intake, and complete requisite data entry, in case management, and grant reporting  system.
  • Participate in and provide reports in weekly team meetings.
  • Respond to general calls/walk-in and email inquiries in a timely and professional  manner. Make referrals as appropriate when not  available internally;
  • Providing in-language assistance to the client or potential client.
  • Interpreting for legal staff and translating documents, as needed.
  • Liaise across teams for program alignment;
  • Stay abreast of best and new practices to incorporate into program
  • Assist with Interpretation and translation of documents, as needed.
  • All other duties as assigned

  • Previous legal experience (legal nonprofit, law firm, court house, government agency) highly  preferred.

Community Outreach Associate

POSITION SUMMARY

The UAO is seeking a dynamic Community Outreach Associate to advocate, educate, and organize Black immigrants and refugees in Illinois. POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct outreach to engage with community members at high traffic areas  (houses of worship, community centers, market centers/restaurants, social events).
  • Support UAO’s campaigns to increase participation amongst marginalized communities.
  • Participate in local immigrant rights group meetings, take notes and report back.
  • Build relationships with partner organizations, mobilize communities, support advocacy and coalition building efforts.
  • Participate in organization-wide work, meetings, campaigns and events.
  • Support in building our database of Black immigrant organizations
  • Recruit volunteers and expand capacity
  • Conduct and assist with text & phone banking, canvassing and other digital organizing tools.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Organizing or advocacy, issue campaign experience

  • Understanding of social and racial justice movement dynamics
