Thank you for your interest in volunteering with the United African Organization (UAO). Volunteers are an invaluable part of our advocacy and organizing projects to enhance civic participation and empowerment of African immigrants and refugees in Illinois.

Volunteer Application
The following areas offer exciting volunteer opportunities at the UAO:
Citizenship Volunteer
You can play an important role by volunteering to assist others to become U.S. citizens and participate in our democracy. You will gain valuable skills in the citizenship process and network with fantastic team of volunteers and staff. Our monthly citizenship workshops take place usually on a Saturday morning or a weekday afternoon.
Training is provided for the following roles:
N-400 preparer, Fee-waiver preparer, Legal Attorney
HOURS: 3-5 hours a month

Immigration Legal Intern
The Legal Intern works under the supervision of the Citizenship and Immigration Coordinator.
TASKS:
- Assist with client intakes and consultations – help client fill out intake form, take notes during client consultation and type notes up, make photocopies of documentation to be added to client file etc;
- Conduct legal research on various immigration matters and summarize research in legal memorandum citing relevant sources;
- Draft cover letters and correspondence with USCIS and other immigration agencies;
- Help filling out immigration forms;
- Listen to Webinars on various immigration matters and take thorough notes
SKILLS:
- Strong legal writing and research skills;
- Fast learner , ability to think quickly and to take initiative;
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to adapt to a diverse cultural environment;
- Basic knowledge of immigration law strongly preferred;
- French-speaking preferred.
TIME COMMITMENT: Minimum of 3 month commitment

Intern: Film Editor on Africans in Chicago
UAO has an open internship position over the Summer for recent college/university graduates who are skilled in video editing.
ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP:
Africans in Chicago is a unique and exciting public education project, launched by UAO. Through the project, we interview African immigrants and refugees about their experiences of coming to, and living in Chicago. The flagship feature of our Africans in Chicago oral history project will be 5 short (5-7 minute) documentary films. The films will be housed on our Africans in Chicago website.
The intern will edit 5 short documentary films, based on footage from our oral history interviews; work with UAO staff to develop the story-line and for guidance during the editing process; and see that the documentaries are completed and made available to the public via the Africans in Chicago website.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience in video editing software like Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere required; some experience in video editing work necessary; experience with photo editing preferred. Dates flexible.
HOURS: 12 hours per week.
